Telephones: A Gift From Above Throughout history telephones have repeatedly been considered one of the greatest achievements in technological advancements since the dawn of the invention. As the first telephone was bought into existence it was unheard of to be able to talk to another person without seeing them face to face. Over time the telephone achieved much more than it was ever thought to be capable of back when the first telephone was developed. In fact people of the modern days have developed an immense sense of attachment to the telephones we have today due to the efficiency and convenience that the amazing technology offers. As a matter of fact could you name a person who does not depend on a telephone to complete their everyday life tasks in today s society? Historically telephones were not always as amazing as they seem to be today and could not accomplish nearly as much. The first practical telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson. The first telephone call was made by Bell as he tried calling Watson on March 10, 1876. With their newly found success they had to go around the world and demonstrate to people the vast potential of having such an amazing device in your very own home. Only a year later on July 8, 1877 the Bell Telephone Company was open for business. The company grew tremendously and by 1886 over 150,000 people in the U.S owned their very own Bell telephone. Loyalty and Sacrifice in Of Mice and Men Steinbeck Essay Example For Students
Loyalty and Sacrifice in Of Mice and Men Steinbeck Essay Of Mice and Men Essays Of Mice and Men: Loyalty and Sacrifice John Steinbeck was born in 1902, in Californias Salinas Valley, a region that would eventually serve as the setting for Of Mice and Men, as well as many of his other works. He studied literature and writing at Stanford University. He then moved to New York City and worked as a laborer and journalist for five years, until he completed his first novel in 1929, Cup of Gold. With the publication of Tortilla Flat in 1935, Steinbeck achieved fame and became a popular author. He wrote many novels about the California laboring class. Two of his more famous novels included Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. Steinbeck got the title for Of Mice and Men from a line of Robert Burns, a Scottish poet, The best laid schemes of mice and men often go awry. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck includes the theme of loyalty and sacrifice between friends. Steinbeck illustrates the loyalty and sacrifice between friends through the friendship of Lennie and George. The issue of loyalty is embodied in the character of George. He is an intelligent man who could make a successful living for himself on his own. He chooses to stay beside his friend Lennie. George can never get a steady job to fulfill his long-term goal of having his own farm. The first job that Lennie and George have together goes well for a while. Eventually Lennie ruins everything that is going good for them. Lennie sees a pretty dress that a girl is wearing. Without thinking about what he is doing, he goes up and grabs the dress to feel the nice fabric. This scares the girl and she tells the boss. Soon the whole town is after Lennie. This is the perfect time for George to start a new life, without Lennie. However, because of his loyalty to Lennie, he chooses to help Lennie escape from the town. Lennie needs George to survive. It is this that propels George to make the sacrifice that he does. After Lennie kills Curleys wife, George knows that this is the end for Lennie. No matter what, someone will eventually kill Lennie. And if Lennie gets away this time, there will be another time, and eventually the inevitable will happen. He truly loves Lennie, so he shoots Lennie painlessly in the back of the head. Lennie dies with the happy thought of the dream of the farm they want to own some day. George truly loves Lennie through thick and thin. He protects him, he guides him, and ultimately saves him from misery. George has sacrificed a better life for himself in the name of loyalty for a friend. Steinbeck shows that the loyalty and sacrifice between friends will make people do whatever they can for their friend. George showed an immense amount of loyalty and sacrifice to his friend Lennie by staying with Lennie through thick and thin. George goes through getting kicked out of place after place, and losing job after job for his friend Lennie. Ultimately George gives the best gift to Lennie he can, the gift of peace. No matter what happens, George stays with Lennie even if it means him sacrificing a better life to be with his best friend. .

Living on Campus vs. Living Off Campus free essay sample
You just graduated high school and now you are getting ready to head to college. Going away to college is the most exciting time for a newly graduated student. You are finally able to get away from home and be on your own. But in the process of applying for a college, you must decide whether to live on or off campus. Are you ready to really live on your own or do you want to experience the traditional college life? This decision is often very hard to make when considering the pros and cons of each. When living on campus or living off campus one must recognize the difference in the rules, the roommates, and the opportunities. Rules for living on campus may knock the campus life living cool points down a little bit. Campus living provided by the school always comes with what they call a ââ¬Å"code of conductâ⬠. We will write a custom essay sample on Living on Campus vs. Living Off Campus or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It is probably a very small book with rules and regulations that students living on campus must follow. For example, there might be a curfew which insists students to be in their bedroom by a certain time. Another example is the amount of guests you can have and if they are even allowed to stay overnight. Campus life has many more regulations on alcohol and drug abuse, the noise level after late hours and even monthly or weekly room expectations. It can sometimes feel like you still living at home. Campus life also has what they call a Resident Assistant or RA. This is a person or a few people who also live on campus and who are responsible for the building they are assigned to. They are the people you go to if there is conflict between you and someone else or any technical problems with the room you are in. They also assist in anything else that is concerning with their assigned building. The rules of living an off campus life might be a little more lenient. There are no RAs and the landlord may only ask you to follow a few rules but other than that you are on your own. For example, you can probably bet that you can bring whoever you want over and have them stay overnight. Another example is there are no room expectations and whatever you break you must get fixed. Living off campus can kind of be a little bit of a shock when you are just coming out of your parentââ¬â¢s house. You can see how the rules play a big part in your living situation. Roommates are usually the first main concern when living on or off campus. When you decide to live on campus you can expect living with people you may not know depending on how many room options they have. In my experience in living on campus, I was put into a four bedroom dorm with three other girls I did not know. In some occasions you can request someone you want to live with but the college informs you that it might not always be a guarantee that you are put with that person. So be prepared to accommodate to other peopleââ¬â¢s living styles. In living off campus, you can get an apartment with whoever you choose or by yourself. If you already have someone or some people in mind you can live with them or find someone or a group of people who are also looking to rent. The good thing about this is you can meet who you are living with beforehand to make moving in more comfortable. One similarity that roommates have both living off and on campus is that you still have to sit down with them and talk about how you are going to handle the common areas like the kitchen and living room. Are you going to allow everyone to clean their own mess in the kitchen and living room or take turns? Is the food being bought for everyone or just for the person who bought it? What are you going to do for the guests sleeping arrangements? These are questions that are very important to go over with your roommates whether living on or off campus. One of the reasons why living on campus is called campus life is because it is usually on campus or adjacent to campus and includes opportunities and activities you can get yourself into. You can also meet a lot of new people. Living on campus is being able to get involved in things that may just be for people who live on the campus. In my experience with living on campus, the college had many activities that only the people who lived on campus were allowed to be a part of. For example, campus life government was like student government but only concerning the campus life. The government set up activities and social events that were not open to the people living off campus. The disadvantage of off campus living is the travel you might have to make to campus all the time. Another disadvantage is not being where the ââ¬Å"actionâ⬠is. Since you do not live on campus you do not have as many chances to get involved in things. Living off campus sometimes can feel a little isolated from things that are going on campus. Personally, I believe living on campus is the best option for someone just starting college. It does not hurt to try a real college experience and get a feel for it. If you then do not like the circumstances you can always live off campus the next year. It is really important to make a wise decision on where you are going to be living and if it is the best fir for you.

Friedrich Nietzsche - The Abyss essays
Friedrich Nietzsche - The Abyss essays He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you. In this statement, Nietzsche is expressing the familiar occurrence of being absorbed by fears, darkness, and even our own thoughts. In life, people often find themselves confronted with situations in which they must face certain evils in their life. This quote advises that if you choose to resist these evils, you should take care that you do not become evil yourself. The second part of the quote explains how this is possible. The abyss gazing back at you means that when you begin to know something that is in essences different than yourself; you take a part of it with you and allow it to alter you. Whoever or whatever this enemy may be to you, conveniently allows you to ignore your own inner capacity for evil. Those who cannot see the evil in themselves, project it outwards. If you wish for enlightenment, be prepared to know ever ything evil as well. If you spend all of your time caring about what the things in life that cannot change, you will eventually ask yourself, "What are you doing?" And you will come to the conclusion that there is no answer. A common theme in philosophy is the loss of individuality in the desire to gain power and wealth. I believe this is what Nietzsche is referring to when creating the metaphor of the abyss. Translating Nietzsche quote into a real issues raised by todays culture is a modern interpretation of the abyss as a conformation to society. This understanding of the quote corresponds with Nietzsches background and beliefs as an existential nihilist. "The mind is everything. What you think you become." -Buddha This quote can be translated to many aspects of our lives, but in this case I believe it relates to Nietzsches quote in that whatever we involve ourselves fully with, there is no escaping the consequences...
